When it's too Far to Crawl.... Ride Your Bike to the Bar

By Mike Hammer

If you have a bike – any bike will do – and you have a bike lock – cause we don’t want you to lose your bike – then Barhopper suggests you leave the car and home, and visit your neighborhood bar/eatery on your bike.

Riding your bike to the bar saves money and the environment., says Mitch Paul, owner of Shaker Cycle, 2389 W. 5th St. Paul store, right down in the Tremont neighborhood, can sell you any kind of bike you need to start pedaling for your beer. If you’re going to a bar that’s less than 2 miles away, why no stop the globally warming and avoiding killing anybody with a DUI, Paul says. Although it’s always best to drink moderately and ride safely, Paul says, with a helmet, lights on your bike and no distractions like an Ipod. “Tremont is a great walking/biking neighborhood,” says Bonnie Flinner, owner of the Prosperity Social Club, an eatery and bar at 1109 Starkweather Ave. http://prosperitysocialclub.com/ The Prosperity has had a big bike rack in front of it for almost a year. “We got a lot of requests from customers (for a bike rack),” says Flinner. A lot of restaurants and bars have bike racks down in and around Tremont, she adds.

Paul and a group of his friends went out on a Bar Ride recently, and started at the Prosperity, before movin on to the Old Angle, 1848 W. 25th St. http://www.oldangletavern.com/ for the Thursday night "Irish Sessions", the Lava Lounge, 1307 Auburn Ave. http://www.coolplacestoeat.com/lava.html for some late night food, and Touch Supper Club, 2710 Lorain Ave. http://www.touchohiocity.com/ for Rock Night. Each places with bike racks or gates/fences that are nearby and can be used to chain your bike to. And more and more bikes keep showing up.

“It’s funner,” to ride your bike around to the bars, says Rob Mulryan. His sister, Vickie Mulryan agrees. “It’s totally funner,” she says. “It’s DUI prevention,” says Mike Gazdak.
Gazdak rode with Paul and the Mulryans on their recent bar biking adventure and adds that biking also gives you a big workout.

The sensation of cruising down the sidewalk on your bike on a beautiful night is perfect, and kinda like flying, Rob Mulryan says. Going from place to place, knowing you’re saving the environment and taking advantage of the many bars and restaurants that have places for bikes is a good thing. You might even shed a couple pounds while getting your pedal on.
So, when it’s too far to crawl, and it’s not really worth wasting the gas money and hurting the earth, pull out your bike and ride on over to your favorite Barhopper endorsed watering hole. And if you don’t have a back, stroll down to Shaker Cycle and let Mitch Paul sell you one, and then ride to the bar with you.
