New Years Eve

Happy New Year from Cleveland Barhopper! I want to say, “Cheers to 2007 and have a great 2008!” We’ve been drinking like pros for a few years, working hard to discover the best bars in town. See the bar search at www.clevelandbarhopper.com for our picks and the best bars, nightclubs and restaurants. Remember be safe, don’t drink and drive. If you find yourself far from home on New Years Eve and without a good way to get home. Get over to your neighborhood Scorchers to hook up with a “Safe Ride” Complements of Ace Taxi see www.acetaxi.com for more details. Remember while you are waiting for your cab or anytime you find yourself at Scorchers have a Dundee’s ale to cap off your night!

If you want to hook up with beautiful people for an upscale night out, get in touch with Kent. He and his crew from hook up Cleveland will be doing it up at Windows on the River for the 6th annual New Years Eve on the River party. See www.hookupcleveland.com for more details.

New Years Eve wouldn’t be complete without Craig Klein, who orbits high over Cleveland. The good news- he’s come down to earth long enough to remind us that he’ll be jamming his harmonica with Chris D on percussion and DJ Manny at Anatomy Night Club- two sets 10:30-11:30 and 12:00-1:00.

If you want to celebrate the New Year early head over to the South Side for Tyler the Terrible and his big bash complete with hats and party favors Saturday Night.

Don't forget about the little guys

I get a chuckle hearing about Great Lakes Brewery running out of Christmas Ale. I find it amusing that a “micro brewer” like Great Lakes could be so arrogant as to forget about the little guys, the very companies who helped bring their product into the public eye in the first place. Cleveland Barhopper is an online bar search engine that in the past has pushed Great Lakes’ products on its website. When was the last time you saw an ad for their “Spring” seasonal brew running in any of our local media? I may be a little bitter not because of their beer (I admit that I enjoy Great Lakes brews), but because the Great Lakes marketing department just opted out of Cleveland Barhopper’s letter to bar owners and liquor companies asking about new products and events. I know they don’t need help selling Christmas Ale, but shouldn’t their marketing department be working with the media outlets and smaller pubs to push their next seasonal specialty beer?

Drink Slingin' Speed Demon

Cleveland’s premier Barhopper, Rob Turek, was cool enough to set up and mc “Drink Slingin’ Speed Demon”. Turek teaches flair bartending in Cleveland http://www.startenders.net/ the event held at whiskey Island, one of the many cool bars featured on http://www.clevelandbarhopper.com/ was a great success. Held on a Tuesday night the event attracted many of Cleveland’s Service industry.

Josh Goldurs (one of the flair bartenders) won the event. 2nd place went to Ducky, who used to work at Liquid, 3rd went to Andy Walsh from Diversions in Chesterland, 4th went to Carlos Corona from Sarava on Shaker Square, 5th went to Shanna, pictured above with Turek, 6th went to Laura Sharpe from Pug Mahones and 7th place went to Mike Jones from Baxter’s Sports Bar in North Royalton. When it's too Far to Crawl.... Ride Your Bike to the Bar

By Mike Hammer

If you have a bike – any bike will do – and you have a bike lock – cause we don’t want you to lose your bike – then Barhopper suggests you leave the car and home, and visit your neighborhood bar/eatery on your bike.

Riding your bike to the bar saves money and the environment., says Mitch Paul, owner of Shaker Cycle, 2389 W. 5th St. Paul store, right down in the Tremont neighborhood, can sell you any kind of bike you need to start pedaling for your beer. If you’re going to a bar that’s less than 2 miles away, why no stop the globally warming and avoiding killing anybody with a DUI, Paul says. Although it’s always best to drink moderately and ride safely, Paul says, with a helmet, lights on your bike and no distractions like an Ipod. “Tremont is a great walking/biking neighborhood,” says Bonnie Flinner, owner of the Prosperity Social Club, an eatery and bar at 1109 Starkweather Ave. http://prosperitysocialclub.com/ The Prosperity has had a big bike rack in front of it for almost a year. “We got a lot of requests from customers (for a bike rack),” says Flinner. A lot of restaurants and bars have bike racks down in and around Tremont, she adds.

Paul and a group of his friends went out on a Bar Ride recently, and started at the Prosperity, before movin on to the Old Angle, 1848 W. 25th St. http://www.oldangletavern.com/ for the Thursday night "Irish Sessions", the Lava Lounge, 1307 Auburn Ave. http://www.coolplacestoeat.com/lava.html for some late night food, and Touch Supper Club, 2710 Lorain Ave. http://www.touchohiocity.com/ for Rock Night. Each places with bike racks or gates/fences that are nearby and can be used to chain your bike to. And more and more bikes keep showing up.

“It’s funner,” to ride your bike around to the bars, says Rob Mulryan. His sister, Vickie Mulryan agrees. “It’s totally funner,” she says. “It’s DUI prevention,” says Mike Gazdak.
Gazdak rode with Paul and the Mulryans on their recent bar biking adventure and adds that biking also gives you a big workout.

The sensation of cruising down the sidewalk on your bike on a beautiful night is perfect, and kinda like flying, Rob Mulryan says. Going from place to place, knowing you’re saving the environment and taking advantage of the many bars and restaurants that have places for bikes is a good thing. You might even shed a couple pounds while getting your pedal on.
So, when it’s too far to crawl, and it’s not really worth wasting the gas money and hurting the earth, pull out your bike and ride on over to your favorite Barhopper endorsed watering hole. And if you don’t have a back, stroll down to Shaker Cycle and let Mitch Paul sell you one, and then ride to the bar with you.
